I have counted 19 of you going on this trip. I have not gotten confirmation from Stephen and Kevin about participation and am not booking them accommodations. If any of the rest of you decide to bail and don't tell me by Tuesday before noon then you will be responsible for your room costs.I just booked my train tickets with bicycle tickets. I paid full retail price. You should be able to travel at least on Sunday at a greatly reduced rate, I think. My cost was 74EUR for the three tickets and accompanying bike tickets.
Marti and I are going to Quedlinburg on Thursday afternoon to prepare things with Frau Vester and Frau Houben. You will make your way to Blankenburg Friday morning on your own.
You should buy three train tickets before Friday. You have to go and do these in person if buying for you and a bike. You can pay with a credit card for these train tickets. You can do that at Berlin Hbf, which will let you get to know where you will go to catch the train:
TICKET #1 For those biking) Berlin Hbf (Hauptbahnhof or Alexanderplatz- the same place) to Blankenburg (Saxon-Anhalt) Hbf for Friday, 11.06.10. The trains leave Berlin Hbf at 5:10AM, 6:10AM, 6:39AM, and 7:31AM. You just buy a ticket for the first one and ride any of them. All the bikes may not be able to go on one train so I would get there early. You will change trains in Magdeburg. The total excursion time for this trip is between 3 and 4 hours. We will be at the Blankenburg train station to pick you up at 10h45. We'll travel 16km by bike from B'burg to Q'burg. If you are later than that then you will make your way to Q'burg on your own.
TICKET #1 For those on foot) Berlin Hbf (Hauptbahnhof or Alexanderplatz- the same place) to Blankenburg (Saxon-Anhalt) Hbf for Friday, 11.06.10. This is the same basic train as the bikers will take, just a different final stop. You will change trains in Magdeburg. The total excursion time for this trip is between 3 and 4 hours. If you travel to Q'burg by train then transit to the Markt Platz (Main Square) where we will meet you at 13h00 in front of the city hall. To walk from the train station to the Markt Platz is about 45min to an hour's walk. Check out online maps before you travel to see how to walk.
TICKET #2 For those biking) Aschersleben Hbf to Dessau Hbf for mid-day Saturday 12.06.10. We'll be going from Quedlinburg to Aschersleben by bike, which is 24km. Then we will board train(s) for Dessau. These trains take from 1 to 2.25 hours, depending on which one you get.
TICKET #2 For those on foot) Quedlinburg Hbf to Dessau (Saxon-Anhalt) Hbf for Saturday, 12.06.10. These are totally different trains than the bikers will take from Aschersleben and they will take more time. Plan to meet in Dessau at the train station by 15h00.
TICKET #3 For All) Dessau Hbf to Berlin Hbf for Sunday 13.06.10. You can decide what time you need to head back to Berlin to get back to business. We will probably leave quite late in the day. We recommend a late afternoon travel in the train that leaves at 15:11. These trains take between 1.5 an 2.5 hours to return to Berlin.
The accommodations will be paid for in cash only. You will need up to 35EUR for the first night and 19EUR for the second night. We'll collect as we move into each location.
YOU SHOULD ALSO HAVE A FIVE TO TEN EURO TIP FOR OUR TOUR GUIDE IN QUEDLINBURG. At the end of the tour one of you should collect the tips from your classmates and then present her with the tips with a warm "Thank You". Try to have bills, not coins for this purpose.
