jaja architects: cornerstone

'cornerstone' by jaja architects in vanlose, copenhagen, denmark
all images courtesy of jaja architects

young danish firm jaja architects has won a design competition for a 6,800 m2 mixed-use
building in vanløse, denmark. located just on the outskirts of the center, the new office
and shopping complex will act as an important gateway to the core of the city.

the site is programmatically fragmented and diverse: small single-family homes stand next
to large apartment blocks, and construction sites for future shopping malls and high rises
are well underway. within this context, the design of 'cornerstone' was not to blend in to its
environment but to become an iconic, public landmark that invites the residents in to utilize
the public spaces provided. the project features a large open plaza leading up to the entrance,
a wide staircase under the peeled-up cantilever that provides seating, and an outdoor space
at the back on a raised building base.

'cornerstone' is expected to be completed in 2011-12.

Revised Schedule

Monday - Studio at 16:00
(We will determine who will be reviewed by our guests on Thursday. Only those projects which had adequate progress and show clarity of intention in both DRAWINGS and MODELS will be eligible for guest review on Thursday. Revised Floor Plans and Sections/Elevations will be needed to be considered for Thursday reviews.)

Wednesday - Studio at 10:00
Short desk crits in preparation of Thursday reviews. Again, PHYSICAL PROGRESS must be made to have a discussion.

Wednesday - Football match at 18:30
My latest recommendation for watching the match is a artificial beach built just NW of the Berlin HBF. There is a giant screen, lots of seating, variety of food/beverage vendors and it's a beach!

Thursday - Guest Reviews at 12:00
We will split into two groups, one led my Marti and a Guest and the other led by Zach and a Guest. These reviews will take place simultaneously. Those students unable to present are encouraged to sit in to listen to the conversation.

Thursday - Dinner at 19:00
We could possibly all go for dinner this night after reviews. Suggestions are welcome, we could also take our guests somewhere.

Friday - Short Tour - Time 11:00
Meet at the Temporäre Kunsthalle Berlin

Next Tempelhof tour at 13:00 FREE - Tempelhof tour (Arrangements were made in Studio on Monday for 15 students)

Representational Drawing Methods :: Images from Royal Danish Academy Diploma Show

  1. Section is shaded on a different level using watercolor as well as prisma marker. The trees are painted on yet another level using a sponge and the people were printed, cut out, and spray mounted to the drawing.
  2. This site plan has only two layers, one is a picture of the students’ context model that has been printed and spray mounted to the hand-drawn context plan. All the shading is graphite.
  3. In this drawing the student has cut the middle floor plan in the projection drawing out of sketch paper. The darker gray areas are on the back of the drawing and are shaded using prisma marker.
  4. The grittiness in this drawing has been developed through the students’ use of charcoal. The rest of the light gray shading is graphite, the people were printed, cut, and mounted on.
  5. The plan uses two different shades of gray to emphasize vertical and horizontal circulation.
  6. This section mainly uses the method of printing, trees, people, patterns, and textures, cuts them out and places them behind the hand-drawn section.
  7. The texture here is created by printing on transparency paper.
  8. Three different methods of representation are being used in this section. Wood texture and concrete textures are printed and placed on their own layer. The trees are on their own watercolor layer. There is graphite shading as well as hand-drawing.
  9. Picture of model printed with a layer of hand-drawing on top.
  10. Hand drawn abstract plan with model built up and out from it with bass wood.
  11. Foam Models, the only other building material used here is a thin plastic for the glazing….
One other method not shown on here is xerox transfer. This technique uses three things, acetone, absorbent paper, and xerox copies. The method is one have a pattern or example drawing on a xerox copy, then get some white museum board or chipboard. Use a cloth soaked with acetone and transfer the xerox to the paper. This creates great texture. Then overlay your vellum and draw!

Itinerary - Jeppe and I will visit a few things Saturday morning. You are all welcome to join. We will meet to view the city models at 10am and then head to Tempelhof. This wasn't intended to compete with your event, we had planned to go see the airport since it will be Jeppe's last day in Berlin.

City Models of Berlin
The permanent exhibition "Urban Development - Planning, Models, Projects" presents two city center models of Berlin in the scale of 1:500 and 1:1.000 as well as the former GDR planning model of 1989 to the public.

Fitting by BIG - Bjarke Ingels Group

Maybe it is all the talk of the trip to København this weekend that has led me to a new obsession with BIG, but here is another simple project by the Bjarke Ingels Group.

This photo series is from a project in København situated on Nordatlantens Brygge. This project is sited on a water front property, engaging both the inherent publicness of the water front and the city fabric that sits behind it.

This project creates two 'lifted' public zones, a grand exhibition space and a fully accessible public plaza, and two levels of primary circulation, one that goes through the public program and one that goes over the whole building and flows out into an artificially lifted ground.

This project is simple, its concept is simple, and it fits.

This Week...

Monday is a work day. You should all be working on "Refining" five of your most FITting insertions. This should always be explored both in model and in drawings used as layers over/under your initial site drawings. Again, work quickly and intuitively. You should always work thoughtfully, carefully and precisely, BUT you should work FASTER. It is better to get models and drawings done for ALL of these Fitted Insertions than to have only one museum quality drawing. THESE DRAWINGS ARE MEANT TO BE EXPLORATIONS SHOWCASING HOW YOU ARE FIGURING OUT THE ISSUES, not archival prints.

We will meet at 13h00 to discuss the schedule for the rest of the week.

This Week...

Monday is a work day.

Tuesday we will review the Models für Morgen at 14h00 in the studio. Have all your work ready to hang up and discuss.

Wednesday we will meet at 14h00 and will have a film at 22h00

Thursday will be small group discussions and work day.

Friday will be a project review day. We will meet from 11h00 to 15h00 with a 1 hour lunch break starting at 12h00.

Models for Tomorrow...(Model für Morgen)

Be ready at 14h00 with your 25 foam massing models and site model. The foam massing models should be quick studies of how mass can shape each site. You have discussed ideas of city, surface, and cell so use your 25 models to think through these topics with a context model. Foam models are inherently volumetric, so use this exercise to play around with form and how that form interacts with your site.
